I had the misfortune of being raised in a Missouri Synod Lutheran Church that had a private school attached to it. MY mother was a teacher there, and as such I spent an entirely too large portion of my youth at the church while she spent all her time trying to please the place.
They preach endlessly about charity and helping others, but real life is just the opposite. I will never forget when I was about 11 in the 70's, we showed up early to unlock the school doors and found a very young couple hiding behind a small building and waiting for the church office to open. They were hungry, looked scared and needed help....so they came to the church seeking sanctuary. BUT, when the teachers, my mother included saw them, they aggressively chased them off. The girl was so scared she was crying, which triggered the man (boy) to stand up for her and yell at the teachers. The teachers drove them away, grabbed their stuff and threw it in the dumpster. I was absolutely shocked and asked where was their love and compassion. They became very angry at me instead.
As it as still an hour before class, the teachers went back to their coffees and gossip and I quietly snuck off. I told them I was going to the church to pray, but once inside went to the basement and an outdoor exit out of their view. I found the scared couple, who must have been no older than 15 or 16 almost arguing a block away. they saw me and stopped so I went directly up to the. I told them I was sorry for what had happened, that they were right for looking for help at a church. The church was wrong for treating them that way. I also tod them that their blankets and bags of stuff (very few things) had been thrown in the dumpster and that the first class started at 8:10 am, so they could sneak in and grab them.
They both calmed some and thanked me and said they would get their stuff. They also thanked me and said I was doing what they expected. I told them there was a YMCA a few blocks away and they were going to go there.
I have hated churches ever since. I don't need to hear some stupid excuse that "People failed them not god!". It was IN god's house, and that's how he let them be treated? Religion has caused more death, destruction and hatred than any other single thing in history. And guess what, they're all the same. Your special brand is no better than anyone else's....
